It helps you identify your competitor’s strategies and plans for link building. You can either try to get the same backlinks or you can improvise and innovate to get new and effective backlinks. There are a few simple steps for an excellent competitive backlink analysis, which are explained below in detail:
1. Finding out competitors:
If you want to strive in industry you’ve got to find out about your competitors. You belong to a niche; you should know who is doing well. Real world competitors are different from web competitors. As in this case, your competitors are the websites that are ranked high in search engine results page (SERP) for your desired set of keywords. Our goal is to analyze the backlinks of these highly ranked websites.
First thing that you need to do is to make a list of keywords/key phrases for which you want to rank. Do not exceed 10 words/phrases. Now for each of these keywords find the websites that rank high in search engines. These are your competitors. You can either find them manually with search engines, or you can also find them with the help of SERP saturation analysis tool. This tool helps you find the websites that appear in the top 10 of search results for a bunch of keywords. Choose up to 5 competitors for each keyword. You can skip this step if you are already aware of your competitors.
2. Backlink data:
We have a list of our SERP competitors and we are ready to find out about their backlink data. Obtain backlink profiles of each of these websites will the help of Open Site Explorer. Create a report which contains maximum inbound links of each of your competitor.
Categorize each of the competitor’s backlink profile for better understanding, i.e. let’s say for 100 backlinks, we categorize them into social media, news, blogs etc. These are the categories which contain the sites that link to your competitor. This was one way of segmentation of backlink profiles. A different way of segmenting them is by sorting them by Page Authority or Domain Authority. Either sort them in increasing order or in decreasing order, but make sure you get to see all your competitors’ backlinks.
Now that, you know what kind of sites link to your competitors, why do they link, you can easily create a plan for each of your own segment. There are a lot of processes and techniques of building links which are explained in the later part of this guide.
An important point to note here is that, Open Site Explorer is not a feasible tool for detecting spammy links. Try to avoid spammy links and websites. Know the strategies and plans of your competitors with an excellent backlink analysis.
