We have completed almost every working phase of a freelance web designer business, right from portfolio to resume to pricing to the business plan and many other things. But the next phase that we will discuss in the following posts is very crucial for any form of business. I’m referring to the freelance marketing process of business.
In simple words, marketing is a commercial process of promoting, selling and distributing a product or service. Freelance marketing strategy says basically about selling yourself out in the market.
I am not telling you to be a marketing guru or to consult a marketing agency. Not all successful freelancers are marketing experts. But every freelancer should have some basic marketing knowledge about where they can pitch in their products and services.
For a freelancer to market his/her products or services, he/she needs to gain recognition. When people will know you better, they’ll be more inclined to hire you for their jobs. Won’t you hire a freelance web designer friend, rather than hiring someone who sends you a cold email? Obviously you would.
So your task is to enhance your online presence so that more and more people know you and can identify themselves with you. This is what we’ll be discussing on the following few posts in freelance marketing strategy.
But to grow your business smoothly, you need to figure out who your target audience is. This is the first step of freelance marketing. You need to know who will buy your product/service. Almost all freelancers believe that their product/service is for everyone. But instead of presenting yourself in front of the entire world (which is more expensive and would require more efforts), find a specific target audience where you can present yourself. Find that niche and drive your entire efforts into them.
Finding and researching more about your target will increase your effectiveness and sales, because once you know who you are selling to, you can design according to them. You know what designing points they will appreciate. You know what they’ll like and dislike. So you can now know what to include and what not to include in your Freelance marketing strategy.
Here are the things that you need to do.
A. Who Is Your Target Audience?:
The first thing that you need to know about your target audience is who they are. You need to know every bit of information about them. Information such as what kind of things they do, what products do they use, their age, gender, annual income demographics and all such types of related information. The answers to these questions will help you know more about your audience for whom you will be designing. The above information can be gathered from a range of online and trade resources. Here are 7 ways to research your freelance target markets. There may be a wide variety of people who may have different choices and habits, but you need to find a commonality between them, leveraging which you can pitch your freelance marketing business.
I know I’ve given a link about this in a previous point, but here I’ll tell you a simple method of researching your target audience.
Finding more about your target audience is not rocket science. It’s about being smart. You need not go online looking for resources when you can do it easily with the resources which are already in your bag. Make use of your present clients to know more about your target audience in freelance marketing business.
Ask questions to your present clients to research more about them in your freelance marketing strategy. Ask them what they like about your service, what convinced them to hire you, what did they like in your portfolio etc. Create a quick , concise survey containing a list of such questions.
Remember that it’s very important to ask the right questions. They’d like when you interject your personal life. Ask those questions, the answers of which will help you market your service in future. Don’t ask irrelevant questions. The demographics are important but only up to an extent. Don’t get caught up in asking boring questions. For example, don’t ask why their salary is high. Just ask about their income and finish the matter.
If you have a product to sell, use beta testing method to research your market. Create similar products and let it out in the market. Check audiences’ response and make changes to your original product accordingly.
C. Customer Values:
The next thing that you need to find is that why your target audience will spend their hard earned money for your freelance marketing service. This will require an elaborate research about your target audience. Finding their likes, dislikes, interests, opinions and most important of them all, their problems – it’s all about them. The best way to know such things is by interacting with them. Use blogs, social networks, forums and other online platforms for this purpose. Engage yourself in discussions and tactfully determine what they’d like most in a freelance web designing service.
When you know such things, include a feature benefit analysis in your freelance marketing strategy service. Instead of flaunting your skills and abilities, tell them how you would solve their problem effectively. For example, say that your creative and innovative web designs allow web users to connect with a website in ways never imagined. Say that your product and its uses contributes to one’s life in much deeper ways.
The economic condition will never improve. So in order to thrive, it is very crucial to determine a well defined target freelance marketing where you can assure that a majority people will hire you for your services.
In the next post, we’ll discuss on how a freelancer should use social networking to gain recognition in the market.
