Internal linking is the linking of your web pages internally with a site. Internal linking is just like a vote for yourself. Internal linking is one of the sub techniques of SEO where you help your visitors to find all the pages, not only just the new ones but also the ones stored in the archives. Most SEO’s ignore or underuse internal linking process, thereby losing potential revenue of ranking. If you don’t give importance to the pages hidden in the archives, then how can you expect the search engines to rank them? Internal linking is critical for SEO for the following reasons:
i. Indicates your value:
If you are not endorsing your own product, how can you expect others to endorse. By internally linking your pages, you indicate search engines that your site is full of information. This can result in regular crawling and indexing of search engine spiders and hence quicker increase in rankings.
ii. Enhances your visitors’ experience:
Internal linking enriches and entices users’ web page experience. They should be able to visit to all the web pages from your single home page. Include related articles, tags etc. This can also help in quick solving of users’ problems.
iii. Reduces Bounce rate:
The bounce rate will be definitely lowered when you provide people with related articles on the link which is being studied now. If your content is strong and engaging, then visitors will continue to stay on your site for a long time.
iv. Indexing process:
Not only the visitors can move from one page to another, but it also allows search engine crawlers to jump from one location to the other, thereby quickening the indexing process.
Here are some ideas on how to create more internal links on your site.
i. Create in content links where you can relate your present topic to previously written topic.
ii. Put up a list of all the related topics at the end of the article for your visitors to refer.
iii. Create a site map or a navigation system which visitors can use to browse through the content in your website.
iv. Re-arrange your content into guides and e-books and then link them to other parts of the site.
Internal links also allow you to optimize your web pages for optimum keywords variations. If you have a web page that describes different types of coffee, then you can include different variations of keywords in your homepage/other pages.
- Types of coffee
- Different types of coffee
- Varieties of coffee
- Variations in coffee
You can choose to include the optimum keyword in the anchor text to link page on types of coffee. The importance of a keyword is determined by keyword research tools. You can either use a single keyword or multiple keywords to link a web page. Your anchor text should include keywords, instead of “Click here”. Creating an internal linking structure is very important for any publisher.
Do not wait for a date to start internal linking. As soon as your post is published you need to bring in two internal links into that post. You can also include more links, but make sure that to relate the posts. This does not mean to litter internal links throughout the posts. There should be an optimum balance in maintaining internal linking process. IMHO, three internal links should be used per 500 words with one being the minimum. So if you are writing a 900-1000 words post, try to include 9 links. Remove the redundant footer and sidebar links wherever necessary. You do not want to confuse your visitors.
Internal linking can come in very handy, but it requires a lot of hard work. But with proper internal linking, this hard work pays off as better search engine rankings.
