There are a number of link factors which are considered by search engines while evaluating a link.
1. Anchor text:
The first and foremost thing that a search engines evaluates in link building is the anchor text. It is one of the most important link factors that is considered. Anchor text is the text which is used to link your website. It is the text written on website B to link to website A. Visitors will have to click on this anchor text to reach website A. A good anchor text will not contain the words “Click here” or “Click for more”, rather it should contain the keywords for which you wish to rank in search engines. If other websites link you on your desired keywords, then search engines will also think that your site is perfectly suitable for that particular keyword. Hence your search engine ranking will rise for that specific keyword.
2. Surrounding text:
The text surrounding your anchor text/ anchor link is also an important factor in determining the relevancy of your site. The surrounding content should be related to the topic of your website and it should focus on your niche. Search engines will also believe about the relevancy of your site.
3. Total number of inbound links of linking page:
If more and more sites links to your site/page, it means that, definitely you have some important and useful information. This makes the search engines believe that your site actually contains something, hence it raises your rank in results page for that particular keyword. More and more inbound links/ backlinks increase the importance and trustworthiness of a page.
4. Link quality:
As discussed in the earlier part of this guide, link quality is extremely crucial. Links from highly ranked content related websites are considered high quality links. Hence links should be obtained from relevant and highly ranked popular sites.
5. Location of the link on referring page:
The location of the anchor text/anchor link on the referring page is an important determinant for search engines. Links in the footer are less valuable than links within the content of the referring page. Higher your link in the referring page, the more value it gets from search engines.
6. Age of the links:
Older links are given much preference to the newer links that are recently acquired.
Reciprocity is the process where you exchange links with other website. It somewhat goes like “I will link your website/page, you link mine”. Reciprocal links are given less value as they imply to search engines that the links are traded not voted. Search engines will always find reciprocal links, but will give them less weight than normal organic links.
8. Deep links:
Links pointing into the deep pages of your website archive are more natural and valuable than links on your home page. This implies that the referrer has gone through your entire website and is really interested in linking to you. Such links are appreciated and recognized by search engines.
9. Total number of inbound links of referring page:
The page/site which has linked to your site should have an adequate number of high quality backlinks. If you get a link from a page that itself has a lot of incoming links, then it contains more value than a link from a page that has less number of backlinks. This is one of the sub points of the popularity of a link.
10. Total number of outbound links of referring page:
It is more preferable and valuable for search engines to have a fewer number of outbound links of a referring page. The lesser the number of outbound links from the referring page, the more importance your page gets. With less number of outbound links, you get strong and concentrated link juice. Hence, this point is taken into consideration.
11. Links from .edu and .gov:
.edu and .gov domains can only be purchased by educational and governmental institutions respectively. These domains are less prone to manipulation and spams, and hence links from such domains are valued by search engines. Links from such domains are difficult to obtain.
12. Link diversification:
Links from different types of sites such as blogs, directories, social networking sites, social bookmarking sites etc. are always appreciated. This one of the link factors which is more appreciated by search engines.
13. Paid links:
Do not indulge yourself in the process of paid linking. Paid linking is an unethical mean of buying links from websites. Paid links are a serious negative factor for search engines. They can cause some serious repercussions.
Link factors are extremely important in determining a rank of a website. A webmaster always try to optimize these link factors to get a better output.
